Here’s the song that’s been running through my mind since I heard of Rowlands’ passing: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dz4AzGaD508

Yes, a wonderful one of Eitzel's evocations of iconic figures; I should have mentioned it. I just found this in the YouTube comments there, from Sean Body's book about Eitzel: "Then, wrestling uneasily with his guitar, he asked the auidence if they were familiar with the work of John Cassavetes. Cassavetes was a celebrated US independent film-maker, married to the actress Gena Rowlands, who starred in many of his best known films. During the making of his final film Love Streams, it was clear that Cassavetes' alcoholism had got far worse; to all intents and purposes, he was drinking himself to death. Eitzel watched this film with someone he was romantically involved with, he told the audience, and couldn't stop thinking about the relationship between the actress and her husband. Every turn of Gena's head, every smile and every look and gesture, seemed to encapsulate her love for Cassavetes who as well as directing also co-starred in the film. In turn, Cassavetes' direction appeared to radiate his love for Rowlands. The more Eitzel watched, the more he was convinced that he would never have that degree of love with the person he was with."

Yep, Jennings' lyrics were often sappy, and yet... I played his Winwood songs on auto-repeat throughout college. (Perhaps as an antidote to Joy Division. )
